Chapter 041: At the Army Intelligence Department
A few days after Yu's contact with the Army, Special Sergeant Major Aono, who was the leader of the platoon assigned to the 2015th Dungeon Flood Prevention Mission, was summoned to the Army Intelligence Department in Ichigaya.
"Special Sergeant Major Aono, I've summoned you today for none other than the report you submitted regarding the recent flood prevention mission."
"We in the Intelligence Department have no choice but to take seriously the report of contact with a beastman that is thought to be unregistered. Moreover, if it is a fox beastman that has never been recorded before, this is even more so. Therefore, I would like to hear directly from you."
In front of Special Sergeant Major Aono, the one-handed sword user, sat two officers wearing the rank insignia of lieutenant colonel. Special Sergeant Major Aono is fired up, thinking that if he can meet their expectations here, his promotion will be guaranteed.
"It was right after we arrived at the tenth floor and started thinning out the orcs. I was wondering why there were so few of them, considering it was an unpopular dungeon, so we went deeper into the floor looking for them."
The Special Sergeant Major slowly spoke as he recalled the events of that time. The Lieutenant Colonel sitting to his left frowned as he spoke, but the Sergeant Major didn't notice.
"Soon after, I noticed a figure running towards me. It was a woman wearing a red and white shrine maiden outfit, and as we passed each other, I saw that she had fox ears and a tail."
The Special Sergeant Major spoke the lie calmly. There was nothing particularly suspicious about what he had said so far, so the two Lieutenant Colonels urged him on without interrupting.
"We were late in responding to the unexpected encounter with a rare beastman, and were unable to stop her. We rushed to chase after her, but one after another, orcs appeared from the direction the beastman had come from."
"Does that mean that you were hit by the train that the beastman had started?"
"Yes, this is just a guess, but I think that she was conceited after becoming a beastman, and challenged the orcs, but was unable to defeat them due to their high defense and stamina, and ran away."
The Lieutenant Colonel on the left frowned again, but the Special Sergeant Major continued speaking without noticing.
"We decided that if it continued like this, it would cause a flood, so we gave up on chasing the beastmen, and entered into combat with the orcs. The battle with the many orcs was tough, but we managed to wipe them out."
The Special Sergeant Major spoke with a bit of pride. The two Lieutenant Colonels looked displeased. The Special Sergeant Major continued, thinking that it was due to the beastmen's unreasonable behavior.
"After that, we searched for the beastman who ran away, but we were unable to find her. We decided that we needed to report it immediately, so we escaped from the dungeon and reported it."
After telling the same report he had submitted, the Special Sergeant Major was expecting words of appreciation. However, the words that came out of the Lieutenant Colonel's mouth were different from what he expected.
"Special Sergeant Major Aono, what happened to the loot you got from defeating the orcs? The mission was supposed to have included retrieving the magic stones."
"Ah... I'm sorry, I was so shaken up by the situation that I forgot to retrieve the magic stones."
Though shaken by the unexpected question, the Special Sergeant Major managed to cover it up. However, the words of the Lieutenant Colonel sitting to his left caused him to despair.
"I see... I'll tell you something interesting. My skill is [Truth Assessment]. It's a skill that can see through disguises and illusions, but it can also see through lies. Do you understand what that means?"
After that, Special Sergeant Major Aono was forced to confess everything and was demoted to corporal. The three soldiers were also demoted from sergeant to private first class.
